Out of the Ashes are a pioneering couple from Gloucestershire, using music as part of their mission to stand for joy, healing and love in the church; energising weary Christians and rejuvenating ailing congregations.

The band has two previous albums: The Garden (2010) and Love Can Be A Bumpy Road (Feb 2015). Eclectic in sound and inclusive in vision, Out of the Ashes is the creation of Gloucestershire husband-and-wife duo Penny Lyon and Kevin Washburn.

Out of the Ashes have their roots in the Beacon Gospel Choir. Frustrated by the rigidity of worship in their CofE church, Penny took a leap of faith in 2006 and started a gospel choir: When thirty people turned up to the first meeting, it was clear they had met a real need in the area. See www.beacongospelchoir.com for more details.

Underpinned by Penny’s unshakable belief that anybody can sing, the choir welcomes all who wish to join and has helped many members grow in self-confidence.

In 2010, Penny and Kevin found themselves inspired to pen a seasonal track, Christmas Lady – in spite of many years playing together, their first songwriting collaboration.

From there grew a fruitful season of writing, culminating in the recording and release of the duo’s debut album, The Garden in 2012. Described by Cross Rhythms as “a warmhearted album” (8/10), the record drew on influences as diverse as bluegrass, 60’s soul and African spirituals along it’s musical journey. The duo returned to the studio with producer Andy Baker (Philippa Hanna, Daughters of Davis) in 2014. The sessions became Love Can Be A Bumpy Road, a passionate and personal collection of songs released in February 2015.

Alongside their music, Out of the Ashes are set to spread a positive message of inclusivity. Penny writes a challenging and inspirational blog, sharing some of her thoughts on faith, music, and taking steps into a whole new season in life. A cornerstone of the duo’s mission is the message that it is never too late to be used by God and take new steps forward in life. In Penny’s words: “You ‘aint done yet!” www.pennylyon.com
